One of the fears of pregnant patients is that they cannot intervene or that it is contraindicated to resort to dental treatments during pregnancy, which is completely false.

This is an unfounded concern because there are a multitude of dental treatments that are not dangerous for the mother, let alone the fetus.

The recommendation of Dr. Ingrid Bădulescu - Doctor specialist in orthodontics and dento-facial orthopedics is for patients to perform a routine consultation before pregnancy. The consultation consists in the evaluation of the dental-periodontal condition, any problems found during the clinical examination will be solved, in order to avoid emergencies during pregnancy.

In the situation where pre-pregnancy control was not possible, we recommend that dental interventions be carried out in the 2nd trimester, when everything is stable. However, if a dental emergency occurs that involves painful crises, uncontrollable bleeding, dental abscesses, these must be resolved by the dentist, regardless of the progress of the pregnancy.

Thus, in the second trimester, extractions can be performed that cannot be postponed after pregnancy.

Another controversy is related to the performance of dental anesthesia. Considering the stress to which the body is subjected due to strong dental pain, it is more dangerous than local anesthesia with substances such as: lidocaine, prilocaine, bupivacaine.

Dental x-rays are also considered dangerous, but if necessary, according to the practice guidelines drawn up by the American Dental Association, digital x-rays can be taken, obviously with appropriate protection. The digital x-rays we perform at Clinics 32 emit a low amount of radiation. We have modern equipment, and the image obtained is extremely faithful, that is, there is no need for several repetitions for a single result.

A common condition in the pregnant patient is pregnancy gingivitis, i.e. inflammation of the gingival margin of hormonal cause, overlapping and aggravated by poor hygiene. This condition can be kept under control in order not to evolve negatively and to minimize symptoms unpleasant with the help of professional cleaning performed in the dental office as many times as needed.

Descaling and airflow procedures are not a contraindication for pregnant women. Likewise, patients wearing fixed orthodontic appliances should not to have a fear related to a possible state of pregnancy. Studies have shownthat female hormones, which are in increased quantity during the period in which o person is pregnant, have an important role in bone metabolism, being able to speed up tooth movement.

So, orthodontic treatment has a increased efficiency in pregnant women, teeth movement speed being higher than normal.

To prevent the appearance or development of dental diseases in during pregnancy it is important not to neglect hygiene daily cleaning of the oral cavity, respecting the 2 mandatory brushing sessions dental, morning and evening, using mouthwash and dental floss.
